Clavis Lelouch and his little princess of pink
The hallways of the east wing echoed with a sound that could only be described as the confident, royal clip-clop of toddler feet in brand-new shoes.
And who was behind the strut of said tiny pink shoes?
"Behold," Clavis announced, dramatically flinging open the carved meeting room doors with one arm, the other securely wrapped around his two-year-old daughter. “The Princess of Style. The Small, Stompy Monarch of Pink—Lillian Lelouch!”
Jin, mid-sip of his morning coffee, visibly flinched.
Leon, softly looking at his little niece choked on a laugh. “Clavis… we have meetings. Reports. Guard formations. And—”
“None of which matter now,” Clavis declared, setting Lillian down carefully. She landed with a proud little bounce, wobbling in the slightest before righting herself. “Observe!”
He clapped once.
Lillian, on cue, lifted one tiny foot, then the other, revealing the adorable squeaky noise the shoes made—an innovation Clavis had insisted upon.
“Squeak-squeak!” she repeated happily.
Nokto, stepping into the room late (and regretting it), blinked. “What… what in the seven sins is that sound?”
“Her shoes. Custom-made. I had them crafted to squeak. It’s hilarious,” Clavis said proudly, crouching to straighten the frilly socks peeking over them. “And she loves them. Don’t you, little lily pad?”
“Squeaky!” Lillian repeated. She turned to Jin. “Squeak!”
Jin narrowed his eyes. “If you make her say ‘Uncle Jin,’ I might consider staying.”
Clavis’s grin widened dangerously. “Why stop there?” He scooped Lillian into his arms and raised her like a prize trophy. “Let’s teach her every uncle’s name. Let’s see who she says first.”
Leon’s face lit up like a match to fireworks. “OH, yes! Come on, Lily! Can you say Uncle Leon?”
“LEE-on!” she squeaked immediately.
“HA! Yes!” Leon threw both arms in the air. “I WIN!”
“No one’s competing,” Jin said dryly. "But.. can you say Uncle Jin, lily??" He grinned, turning to the small girl who only giggled in return.
Nokto sat down on his seat, grinning widely. “Lily, say ‘Uncle Nokto.’ Come on. Uncle Nokto, the most handsome one.”
“...Noctoo?”
“I’ll take it!” Nokto fist-pumped. “Close enough!”
Yves, arriving fashionably late and holding a tray of fresh fruit, looked alarmed. “Why are all of you shouting at a toddler?!”
“She’s learning names,” Clavis said, now lazily spinning Lillian in a circle while she squealed in delight.
“Yves,” Leon said, eyes glittering, “your turn. She got mine in one try.”
Yves adjusted his gloves. “Lillian, dear,” he said softly, crouching down and offering her a small blueberry, “say Uncle Yves.”
“Eeevss.”
Yves beamed like the sun. “Smart girl.”
Luke, curled up in a chair in the corner, rolled his eyes. “Don’t bring her over here.”
“She’s making the rounds,” Clavis declared, already on the move.
Luke sighed as his niece stumbled over, her shoes squeaking loudly, arms outstretched. “Uncle Wook?”
Luke stared.
Then exhaled slowly. “...Fine. That was cute.”
“Alright, alright,” came Jin’s gruff voice again. “The meeting?”
“Fine,” Clavis sighed with exaggerated sorrow. He crouched down next to Lillian. “Daddy has to go do boring grown-up things, lovebug. Be brave while I fight the great beast known as Bureaucracy.
“Squeaky?”
“Yes. Take your shoes. They are your sword.”
She stomped her feet twice in reply. SQUEAK. SQUEAK.
Clavis chuckled and rose to his feet, brushing off his jacket before reaching down and scooping up Lillian one more time. She clung to him sleepily now, her moment of squeaky triumph giving way to that soft-eyed toddler daze, her thumb halfway to her mouth.
He pressed a kiss to her curls. “Alright, my queen of squeaks. Let’s get you to your nap, shall we?”
“Nooo nap,” she whined into his collarbone, clearly already halfway there.
“I know, darling,” he whispered conspiratorially, “it’s how I feel about morning briefings.”
As he passed the table, the brothers glanced up again. Leon gave him a grin. “Go on. I suppose this little meeting can wait. The little princess demands it so."
Yves sighed, nodding as Jin and Nokto laughed, Luke leaving the room.
It was another day at the Rhodolite Palace, it seemed.

The cover illustration by Yangsook Choi for the children’s book Earthquake written by my Aunt Mildred Chan Lee under the name of Milly Lee.
Day of Days: A Girl’s-eye View of San Francisco Chinatown and the 1906 Earthquake and Fire
My late aunt Mildred (a.k.a. “Nimsie”) Chan grew up in a bustling, multi-generational household in San Francisco. Her daily life involved attending Chinese school after her regular classes and communicating predominantly in Cantonese, both at home and within her local community. Her childhood occurred before WW II – before the beginning of the end of Exclusion and segregation – in the tight-knit confines of the Chinatown community.
As a school librarian, Nim noticed a lack of books that reflected her own experiences as a bicultural child. While there were stories about Asia, they often portrayed it as a distant, ancient world, disconnected from modern, and even Chinese American, life. This realization fueled her desire to see more stories that depicted American children, navigating life between two cultures.
After retiring and being actively involved in the American Library Association, among other professional groups, Nim was well-prepared to author her first book, "Earthquake" under the name “Milly Lee.” The story is based on my grandmother's harrowing experiences during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

"This morning the earth shook and threw us from our beds. We were not hurt, just stunned." The eight year-old Lily (a.k.a. Lillian) after literally being tossed out of bed by the earthquake in the early morning hours of April 18, 1906. (Illustration by Yangsook Choi for the children’s book, Earthquake, by Milly Lee).
She vividly describes through the childlike eyes of my future grandmother, being awakened by the earthquake, the family’s desperate packing for the flight through a devastated city, and the march west before the onslaught of the ensuing great fire.

My future great grandmother Hee Ching Shee, in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, packing household items, including a small household shrine to the goddess (Illustration by Yangsook Choi for the children’s book Earthquake written by my aunt under the name of Milly Lee.)

"BaBa hurried out to seek help and returned witha cart and two kinsmen." Family members loaded onto the cart what belongings they could salvage from a ruined Chinatown out to Golden Gate Park during the morning of the Great Earthquake, April 18, 1906.(Illustration by Yangsook Choi for the children’s book, Earthquake, by Milly Lee).

“Up the steep hills, across the city, we pushed and pulled the heavy cart.” (Illustration by Yangsook Choi for the children’s book Earthquake by Milly Lee.)
The book not only offers an engaging historical account but also serves as a poignant homage to the many Chinese who suffered immense losses during the catastrophe.

The Qing-era household shrine or altar of the pioneer family of Hee Hoy (formal name: 許呈輝 (canto: "Heui Ching Fai") which was saved by my great grandmother from the earthquake and fire of 1906 that literally scoured San Francisco Chinatown. (Photograph from the collection of the Chinese Historical Society of America). The figurine is the Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin (觀音; mando: “Guan Yin”; canto: “G(w)un Yum”). As researcher and collector Wong Yuen-Ming observes that the Chinese characters 水月宮 (mando: “shuǐ yuègōng“; canto: “seoi yuht gung“) or “Water Moon Palace” appear in relief on the gold-colored badge placed above the carved wooden alcove for the figurine. The iconography denotes the portable shrine as dedicated to Shuiyue Guanyin (Chinese: 水月觀音; pinyin: Shuǐyuè Guānyīn; canto: “seoi yuht G(w)un Yum“ ) or a “Water-Moon Guanyin.” This traditionally masculine form of Guanyin is often presented as a further manifestation of the Thousand-Armed Guanyin. The religious supplicant invokes the deity for good rebirth, safe childbirth, and enlightenment. The figurine in this artifact appears consistent with the portrayal of Guanyin as a young man or woman. According to scholar Chun-fang Yu, artistic expressions of the Water Moon Guanyin often depict the deity in a relaxed “lalitasana” pose beside a pond or lake with the moon reflected in the water; the moon in the water is a metaphor for the Buddhist tenet of Śūnyatā. Given the devotional popularity of Guanyin in Asian, the Chinese pioneers not surprisingly brought the worship of the Bodhisattva to California, among other deities venerated in southern China.
My grandmother was 8 years old at the time of the great quake and fire, but she never spoke publicly about her experiences. Decades later, and when one of my cousins talked about sleeping in a tent during a family camping trip, my grandmother casually remarked to my Aunt Nim: “I’ve slept in a tent before.”
"Where?" my late Aunt Milly Lee inquired.
"Golden Gate Park, we were there for the earthquake.” The rest, as is often said, remains history and the inspiration for the children’s book, Earthquake.
The protagonist for the children’s book, Earthquake, by Milly Lee. As San Francisco's Hall of Records had been destroyed by quake and firet, a 10 year-old, Lily (a.k.a. Lillian) Hee, sat for this identification photo to accompany a 1908 affidavit (signed by Dr. Minnie Worley) to prove her birth in San Francisco Chinatown as a third-generation Californian.

Time has not been kind to Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour, either the play or the second film adaptation. It had been filmed once before, also under the direction of William Wyler, as These Three, in 1936, only two years after it had become a Broadway sensation. At that time, the central accusation that the two schoolmistresses, Karen and Martha, were lesbians had to be changed to a heterosexual moral transgression -- that both were lovers of the same man, Dr. Joe Cardin. Despite this bowdlerization, there are many who think that the earlier movie is the better one, largely because it puts the emphasis on what Hellman said was the play's theme: "the power of a lie." In our contemporary climate, the idea that Karen and Martha might be lovers has much less power to shock, so that to our eyes, the furor that arises from a child's confused and devious accusation seems excessive. But perhaps more to the point is an artistic one: In today's LGBT community the idea that a work of fiction dealing with non-heterosexual relationships has to end in the death of one or more of its supposed transgressors has been labeled a "kill the queers syndrome." Even more recent films such as Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, 2005), though praised for dealing candidly with queer relationships, have been faulted for too easily resolving their plots by having their central characters murdered by bigots. The Children's Hour falls more blatantly into this trap with Martha's suicide, which seems not to come out of anything integral to the character but instead out of the need for a dramatic conclusion to the play and film. It's a film with good performances, though its actors sometimes have to struggle against their star personae. James Garner was so familiar as a smart aleck on the TV series Maverick that he feels a little miscast as Dr. Cardin, Karen's fiancé, who is unable to convince her that he may indeed have believed in the rumor about her relationship with Martha. Audrey Hepburn, too, carries the aura of winsome romantic comedy heroine into her performance as Karen, but is more successful at overcoming the image. Of the three leads, Shirley MacLaine is the most successful, since she doesn't have to deal with a too-precisely established screen persona, and she brings real depth to Martha's conflicts, including her simmering resentment of Karen's supposed abandonment of their plans in order to marry Joe, and her anguished recognition of her possibly repressed lesbianism. But the real standouts in the cast are the supporting players, Miriam Hopkins (who had played Martha in These Three) as the flibbertigibbet Aunt Lily and Fay Bainter, Oscar-nominated for her role as Amelia Tilford, whose credulity when her niece tells her the lie about Karen and Martha brings about the crisis. Wyler's direction is, as always, precise and professional, and the art direction of Fernando Carrere and the cinematography of Franz Planer make the primary setting, the girls school, follow the film's changes in mood, from innocent to grim.
I have loved you the way they said!
